India tells citizens in Canada to exercise caution as relations worsen

On Wednesday, India asked its citizens in Canada, particularly students, to exercise the utmost care as relations deteriorated as a result of each country’s expulsion of a diplomat from the other over the murder of a leader of a Sikh separatist group. Since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that his country was looking into plausible claims that Indian government operatives may have been involved in the death of Hardeep Singh Niger in British Columbia in June, tensions have risen. Without citing any proof or particular occurrences, India’s foreign ministry advised all Indian nationals in Canada and those considering a trip to take extreme vigilance in light of the country’s escalating anti-Indian activities and political tolerance of hate crimes and violent crimes.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister of public safety, told reporters that his nation is secure only hours after India issued a travel advice. Canada’s accusations that Indian spies were responsible for the assassination have been categorically refuted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Indian students in particular are reminded to exercise great caution and maintain vigilance in light of Canada’s deteriorating security climate, the government warned in a statement.

Canada has been maintaining security advice for months now, advising its nationals to go to the South Asian nation with extreme caution. But on Monday, Canada updated its COVID-19, measles, and Zika virus health advice for India. According to the Canadian government, the change was part of standard maintenance that was pre-planned for the section on travel health advice.

India has been the top source nation for foreign students in Canada since 2018. According to the Canadian Bureau of International Education, that number increased by 47 previous year to close to 320,000, accounting for almost 40% of all international students.

A private entertainment company called Booked My Show revealed the cancellation of Canadian artist Shubhneet Singh’s India Tour on Wednesday. Officials from Canada have so far refrained from explaining why they think India could be involved in Niger’s killing.
