After minors were reportedly “kidnapped and killed” by armed criminals, the already-tense situation in Manipur became more violent. Home Minister Amit Shah promptly appointed the CBI Special Director and other officers in Manipur to look into the situation. On September 27, a CBI team headed by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar arrived in Manipur to look into the deaths of two students. In the meantime, Manipur’s chief minister Biren Singh said that the CBI has detained four suspects in this case from Churachandpur.
For the suspected murder of two children from Manipur who vanished in July, four persons have been detained. N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, made the statement and said that his administration will pursue the death penalty for anyone responsible.
India: CBI probes cases of violence in Manipur

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four people accused in the ongoing investigation of cases related to violence in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. The officials say that two men and two women have been arrested in connection to the death of two students, and teenagers. The death of the two students has triggered a fresh wave of violence and protests in the northeastern state. The CBI registered two cases on the 23rd of August at the request of the Manipur government. The agency took over the investigation of these cases, which were earlier registered by state police on the complaints of parents of the minor victims. The complaint was first registered on July 8th in the state capital, Imphal.
The CBI said that the arrested accused would be produced before the court at Goal, which was designated so as per the orders of the Supreme Court of India. Tensions spiked in several districts across the violence-hit state of Manipur after the photos of the two students surfaced. Now, the internet was shut down in the state once again in the wake of fresh tensions. The state has been embroiled in ethnic violence ever since May earlier this year.
