On September 27, a CBI team headed by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar arrived in Manipur to look into the deaths of two students. In the meantime, Manipur’s chief minister Biren Singh said that the CBI has detained four suspects in this case from Churachandpur.

The officials say that two men and two women have been arrested in connection to the death of two students, and teenagers. The CBI registered two cases on the 23rd of August at the request of the Manipur government. The agency took over the investigation of these cases, which were earlier registered by state police on the complaints of parents of the minor victims. The complaint was first registered on July 8th in the state capital, Imphal.

The CBI said that the arrested accused would be produced before the court at Goal, which was designated so as per the orders of the Supreme Court of India. Tensions spiked in several districts across the violence-hit state of Manipur after the photos of the two students surfaced. Now, the internet was shut down in the state once again in the wake of fresh tensions. The state has been embroiled in ethnic violence ever since May earlier this year.
