Having so many highly skilled engineers there aren’t any Indian smartphone companies in Global like Xiaomi, iphone, Oneplus etc. Indian smartphone companies can’t compete with others Smartphone Companies.
Why is India not able to make quality smartphone like Xiaomi, iphone, Oneplus etc?
The US has. Apple Korea has. Samsung China has. Xiaomi and India have Squat in early 2000, Indian smartphones had become so popular. Micromax had even left Samsung behind in sales. At that time, there were 800 million users in India who were using feature phones. And we’re about to buy the next smartphone. Even after having so much opportunity which was there and is still a lot.
why could the Indian smartphone not become stable in India?
The brand could not be created. First of all, we have to go into a little history. They kept rebranding. Indian smartphones were very popular. Apple, Samsung, Intex, Lava—all the phones were here. And they were selling phones for Rs 25,000–25,000. Yet Indian smartphones kept giving phones with good specifications for Rs 15,000. At that time, Indian smartphone companies used to bring phones from China. Stick their label on them and sell them in India. There was so much demand for their smartphones at that time. Yet they never think about manufacturing, thought of setting up a factory here, they did not do it.
They were completely lazy in providing service and quality products. Micromax’s tab got blasted. A man’s phone got blasted in his pocket. Even asked a man to wait for 6 months for phone service. He filed a case and a fine was imposed on Micromax. And when the phone is brought from China. They don’t have components, and no factory so they cannot repair the phone. If give a new one, then it will be a loss because they need money.
How can they provide service?
I got the proof of this when I went to the Gionee factory in China which is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer.
There, I was refused entry to the 2nd floor. I asked why. Later I came to know that phones are being made here for Micromax, Karbonn, and Lava. In 2013–14, the potential for online sales also appeared. And Make in India also started where the Indian smartphone brands had a lot of opportunities to grow. Even new startups had a chance, new startups reminded me of a new series coming, “Hustlers: Jugaad Ka Khel”. What an approaching trailer, it has the vibrant atmosphere of Mumbai. And the main lead is street smart and ambitious. His brother has imposed traditions on him.
But overcoming them, he makes his way into this city. In 2013–14, the potential of online sales also came. But Indian smartphones were still focusing on the offline market. That we will only sell in shops. Eyes were opened by MotoG. In February 2014, launched its phone which was sold online only. And for ₹ 8,000, it was offering the same specifications as the phones that were being sold for ₹ 12,000 at that time. Such an impressive sale happened it shook the entire world’s smartphone industry. India has so much potential. It has the second-largest group of customers in the world after China.
It was a big business where many phones could be sold. So Xiaomi and the Chinese company thought that there were so many customers in India. And they were selling our phones and earning so much profit. Why don’t we move? Xiaomi brought its MI-3 phone in 2014 and Sold it here and it sold out. Within a few months, Oppo-Vivo boards were installed in smartphone markets and shops everywhere in India. Indian market was captured by Chinese smartphones. Nothing in 2015. In July 2016, Micromax came and brought a phone.
We’ll sell it online and that phone was also rebranded. Wow! Wow! Now we were also waiting for Micromax’s smartphone to arrive, manufactured in Micromax’s factory. Finally, the Chinese company disappeared from India. And after a long wait of 1.5 years, Micromax worked hard day and night like crazy. And didn’t let the R&D department sleep. Brought Yu-Yureka Black which was a rebranded phone from China. Wow! Hey, which weed did you smell? Yu-Yureka was a copy of Coolpad f2. Dual 4 was a copy of V8, Dual 5 was a copy of Qiku.
Later, they also brought Yu-Yureka Black, which too was a copy. After that, our patience and hope were broken. Nothing will come now. Where will it come from? They were not ready to do anything. After completely capturing the Indian smartphone market, companies like Micromax woke up in 2020. And set up their own manufacturing facility and then started making their phones here. It’s like the Bhandara has ended a long time ago and now you are coming with a plate and a bowl.
Are Indian smartphone makers losing the battle?
Yes, the potential is there, although the sales of all-over smartphones in Q-2 fell by 10% even after all this. Lava raises hopes. They launch their phones consistently. Every year, Lava launches 4 phones. Even in software, their phone is considered a bloatware-free phone. Which is a clean phone. You can give it to anyone. There are no hardware issues to be seen but Lava needs to work on its software. It should take inspiration from Samsung so that it can create some UI like Samsung’s One UI which people like very much.
If the Indian smartphone company works hard, does manufacturing and becomes serious. We want to create a global brand then it will happen. But the government should also give them extra tax benefits and provide extra help in this. If an Indian smartphone company gives us a phone that is equal to China’s rate and gives us better specifications. We are still sure that we will buy it. Indian smartphone brands will also have to be serious. Now you guys tell, whether this should be done so that smartphones can be made in India.
And that smartphone goes out of India and everyone says that it has come from India. So I have to say to all the Indian smartphone companies that if you bring your smartphone then you should manufacture it yourself. Make it well, both UI and hardware do proper research and then bring it. If you bring it by rebranding it again, we will all say.
