How to do Istenjaa?
In this Article, we will guide you on the etiquette of using the toilet and how to purify yourself after using the toilet according to the Islamic perspective and the prophetic tradition. Before we begin, it’s important to understand that purifying ourselves from impurity is a condition for our prayers to be valid and accepted by Allah. Negligence in cleaning after using the toilet can also lead to punishment in the grave, as stated by the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
Now, let’s discuss the following etiquette before using the toilet while using the toilet, and after using the toilet.
- Number 1:
Say Bismillah. This means “in the name of Allah.” The messenger of Allah said, “The gaze of the Jinn is blocked from seeing the private parts of the children of Adam when one of them says, Bismillah.”
- Number 2:
Enter with your left foot.
- Number 3:
Say the following supplication, “Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from all offensive and wicked things.”
- Number 4:
Try not to speak unnecessarily or use your phone while using the toilet. It was reported that a man passed by the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam while he was urinating and greeted him. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did not respond and said to him, “If you see me in this state, do not greet me, for I will not respond. Sit down and avoid urinating while standing whenever possible.
- Number 5:
Avoid facing or turning your back to the Qibla. The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, “Whenever you go to relieve yourself, neither turn your face nor turn your back toward the Qibla. However, if you’re using a fixed toilet seat in a room and have no other choice, it is permissible to face or turn your back to the Qibla.”
- Number 6:
Be careful not to let drops of urine land on your clothes or body. Negligence in this regard was mentioned as a reason for the punishment in the grave by the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam. The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, “Avoid urine, for most of the punishment of the Grave is because of it.”
- Number 7:
Use your left hand when washing the private parts. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam instructed, “When one of you goes to relieve himself, he must not touch his private parts with his right hand or wipe it with his right hand.”
- Number 8:
Clean yourself properly after relieving yourself. There are three options to remove impurities.
Option one: Use toilet paper to clean yourself. This is also known as digimar. If you use toilet paper or any solid matter due to the availability of water, this is sufficient. Do it at least three times or more. There will be no need for you to wash your private parts with water later. You make wudu and you can pray.
Option two: Use water only. This is known as istinja. Wash your private parts and ensure all impurities are removed. This is considered better and purer.
Option three: Use toilet paper and water together, starting with either of the two. This is the ideal option. In any case, wash or wipe off impurities three times or more, preferably finishing with an odd number. The Prophet used to wash his private parts three times.
- Number 9:
Exit with your right foot, following the practice of the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
- Number 10:
Say the following supplication, “This means, ‘Forgive me, O Allah.’ You can also add ‘Alhamdulillah,’ which means ‘Praise is to Allah, who has relieved me of impurity and given me good health.'”
- Finally, Number 11:
Wash your hands with soap, ideally to maintain cleanliness. It was the practice of the Prophet Sallam to rinse his hands three times after touching his private parts or during bathing, as narrated by his wife Maimuna.

Conclusion
Remember, my brothers and sisters, the correctness of our prayers depends on our physical purification. Try to purify yourself, as Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure. We ask Allah that he makes us from those who strive to purify themselves so that we may gain his love. Amen.”
